Many venues partner with respected Sunshine Coast and Queensland roasters, rotating blends and single-origin beans depending on the season. You’ll see the roaster’s name proudly displayed on the machine, not as decoration, but as a point of pride. Izba Espresso in Bells Reach brews Fonzie Abbott, one of the Sunshine Coast’s most respected local roasters. The Frog’s Kitchen at Bulcock Beach serves organic Merlo coffee. Coffee Cat On Kings Beach roasts their own house blend, Catnip Brew. Each café has chosen its roaster for a reason, and most will happily explain why if you ask.
Single-origin offerings change throughout the year, highlighting beans from Ethiopia, Colombia, Guatemala and beyond. Expect flavour notes that go well beyond “strong” or “weak.” If you’re someone who reads the tasting card before ordering, you’ll feel right at home here.
The Beachfront Ritual
The humble flat white remains the reigning champion in Caloundra (this is still Australia, after all), but the standard is high.
Coffee Cat On Kings Beach under the Rolling Surf Resort is the venue that most perfectly captures what beachfront coffee in Caloundra should feel like. There’s no road between your table and the waves. You’re sitting under pandanus trees with Kings Beach cove spread out in front of you, and the doors open at 5:30am every single day, which is earlier than most of us can be reasonably expected to get out of bed on holiday. Their Catnip Brew is the house blend, and it’s served alongside a creative breakfast menu that has earned them the #1 ranking of 14 restaurants in Kings Beach on Tripadvisor with over 700 reviews. The Quinoa Nasi Goreng and the Shakshuka are the breakfast picks if you’re looking for something beyond eggs on toast.
It’s also a restaurant by night (dinner Thursday through Sunday, trivia Thursdays at 6pm, live music Friday, Saturday and Sunday), which means the same team is running a venue that takes both its coffee and its kitchen seriously across the full day. That’s not always the case at a beachfront café.
The Suburban Sanctuary
Not every great coffee experience needs to be on the beachfront. Some of the most passionate coffee being poured in Caloundra is happening in the quieter suburban pockets where locals gather midweek and tourists rarely venture.
Izba Espresso at 1-13 Bells Reach Drive in Caloundra West is the standout. Nestled amongst the established trees of Quinn Park and overlooking one of the best adventure playgrounds on the Sunshine Coast (climbing nets, rope ladders, rock wall), Izba has built a following that regularly produces reviews along the lines of “the best coffee I have found anywhere on the Sunshine Coast.” They brew Fonzie Abbott from sunrise, the menu blends Aussie café classics with Turkish-influenced dishes (think slow-cooked lamb, sujuk alongside the eggs Benny), and the vibe is warm without being try-hard. Open for breakfast and lunch seven days, plus dinner Wednesday through Saturday.
For parents, the playground adjacency is the genuine selling point. You can sip your flat white while the kids burn energy within clear view. But even without the playground, the coffee stands on its own.
The Pastry Pairing
If your ideal coffee comes alongside a world-class pastry, 22 Cribb St at 90 Bulcock Street is where you go. Head pastry chef Dhanushka Manjula built this place from scratch as a Landsborough original, and the Caloundra branch opened in late 2025 as the second location. The pastry programme is the headliner (think croissants, tarts, and seasonally rotating baked goods that bring queues on weekends), but the coffee programme is equally considered. It’s the kind of place where the pastry and the espresso are designed to complement each other, and where you find yourself ordering a second of both because the first pairing was too good to leave at one.
The Beach-View Brew
The Frog’s Kitchen at Shop 5a, 38 Esplanade Bulcock Beach (tucked into the Grand Pacific Resort) serves organic Merlo coffee alongside an Asian-fusion breakfast and lunch menu, and the beach views from the outdoor tables are genuinely lovely. It’s dog-friendly, family-friendly, open from 6:30am to 2:30pm Friday through Wednesday (closed Thursdays), and the Croque Madame has achieved near-legendary status among Caloundra regulars. The coffee here is consistent and well-made, and the gluten-free and lactose-free options mean dietary needs are properly catered for rather than treated as an afterthought.
The Café Culture Factor
Coffee in Caloundra isn’t just about the cup. It’s about the setting.
Beachfront cafés at Kings Beach let you sip within sight of rolling surf. Bulcock Beach offers calmer waters and breezy esplanade seating. Suburban spots like Izba reveal the quieter side of the community, where the coffee is just as good but the pace is slower and the tables are easier to get.
Add in house-baked pastries, sourdough toast topped with local avocado, hinterland dairy milk and seasonal fruit, and suddenly coffee becomes a full-blown morning ritual. You’ll see remote workers set up with laptops, surfers debriefing the swell, parents corralling toddlers, retirees settling in with the paper. It’s an easy blend of community and quality.
