Late Night Bites: Where to Eat After Dark in Caloundra

Because sometimes the day doesn’t end at sunset, and neither should your appetite.

Most people think of Caloundra as a brunch-and-beach town. And it’s true that the café scene here is exceptional. But if you assume the food shuts down when the sun dips, you’re missing an entire chapter. Caloundra’s evening dining culture is genuine, varied, and very much worth planning around.

The honest truth? This is a coastal town, not a capital city. Most kitchens serve their last orders by 8:30 or 9pm, so the smart move is to plan your evening early rather than wander the streets at 10pm hoping for the best. Here’s how to do it properly.

The Early Evening Ritual

One of the best things about coastal living is that early dining is completely normal. Heading out at 5:00pm or 5:30pm isn’t a sign you’re past it. It’s a sign you understand the rhythm of the Coast. You beat the peak rush, the light is still golden, the service is quicker, and you get to walk home along the Coastal Pathway as the sky turns from peach to deep blue.

Build this into your evening: a pre-dinner walk from Kings Beach to Bulcock Beach along the headland, then straight into dinner while the residual warmth of the day is still in the air. That’s the Caloundra evening loop, and it works every time.

The Spontaneous Walk-In

Not every good evening meal needs a booking. Pholklore at 110 Bulcock Street is traditionally walk-in only (except for groups of 10 or more), which makes it the perfect spontaneous evening option. This Vietnamese-inspired Asian fusion restaurant from Victoria (they run four locations across Geelong, Torquay, Lorne and Ocean Grove, with Caloundra as their first Queensland outpost since late 2025) does communal tables, beachy energy and food that lands fast. The Chicken Pho x Laksa fusion has a cult following across every location. The chicken katsu rice paper rolls are so popular that when they tried to take them off the menu, customers ran a campaign to bring them back. Add in Vietnamese beers (Beerlao, Beer Hanoi, 333) and cocktails that tend to sneak up on you, and you’ve got an evening that feels like it belongs somewhere much bigger than a Wednesday night on Bulcock Street.

The Beachfront Dinner

Coffee Cat On Kings Beach is primarily known as a café, but Thursday through Sunday it transforms into a proper dinner venue with live music on the deck Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. There’s no road between your table and the waves, the pandanus trees are lit up, and the dinner menu goes well beyond the breakfast classics. Trivia night is Thursdays at 6pm if you want to start the evening with a bit of competition. The transition from daytime café to evening restaurant is seamless, and the 5:30am-to-late operating rhythm means the team is equally comfortable serving a sunrise flat white and a sunset cocktail.

The Refined Evening

If you want dinner to feel like an occasion without the stiffness, Bianco Italian Cuisine and Bar at 5 Tay Avenue is the call. Head chef Ibrahim Haddad runs a kitchen producing handmade pasta, Pizza Contemporanea (the lighter, higher-hydration, long-fermented style), cicchetti share plates and weekly specials with broader Mediterranean influences. The bar programme is the genuine differentiator: an extensive wine list spanning Italy, the Mediterranean and beyond, with premium selections served by the glass via a Coravin system. Weekly live jazz lifts the room without overpowering the conversation. Dinner runs Tuesday through Sunday, with the latest service on Friday and Saturday until 9pm. This is a date-night venue that rewards booking ahead, especially for the bar seats.

The Pub Dinner

Sometimes you just want a cold beer, a properly cooked steak and a deck with a view. Caloundra Hotel at 12 Bulcock Street (locals call it CBX) has 24 beers on tap, char-grilled steaks as the house specialty, a spacious deck, and a Wednesday pool competition if you want to turn dinner into a whole evening. The bistro serves dinner Monday through Sunday, and the atmosphere on a warm evening with the deck doors open is as good as pub dining gets on the Coast.

For something with a bit more smoke and spice, Thirsty Beaver Bar and Kitchen at 79 Bulcock Street runs a Red Dirt Smoker all day, producing 18-hour pork ribs, beef short ribs and brisket alongside nine local beers on tap. Wednesday is rib night if you want to time it right. The combination of low-and-slow BBQ and Sunshine Coast craft beer is the sort of evening that makes you wonder why you ever bothered cooking at home.

The Suburban Surprise

One option most visitors (and quite a few locals) don’t know about: Izba Espresso at 1-13 Bells Reach Drive in Caloundra West has recently expanded into evening dining, with dinner service Wednesday through Saturday. The menu leans into the Turkish-influenced flavours that set the café apart during the day (slow-cooked lamb, sujuk, chargrilled pork cutlets), and the reviews from locals who’ve discovered the evening service have been overwhelmingly positive, with multiple regulars now visiting weekly. The setting is different from the beachfront dinner experience: you’re nestled amongst the trees of Quinn Park, overlooking the adventure playground and the parkland, with a quieter, more intimate feel than the busier Bulcock Street strip.

Evening Dining Tips

• Book for the refined spots. Bianco, Three Restaurant and Acqua all reward a booking, especially on Friday and Saturday evenings. Walk-in works for Pholklore, the pubs and most of the casual venues.
• Eat early. Most kitchens close between 8:00pm and 9:00pm. Arriving by 6:00pm gives you the best combination of table availability, unhurried service and golden-hour light if you’re near the water.
• Build a circuit. Caloundra is compact enough that you can walk between most dinner venues. Start with a pre-dinner drink at one spot, eat at another, and finish with a gelato at Fifty Acres on Bulcock Beach or a scoop from De Lish Fish at Kings Beach before heading home.
• Check the night-specific programming. Wednesday rib night at Thirsty Beaver, Wednesday pool comp at CBX, Thursday trivia at Coffee Cat, Friday to Sunday live music at Coffee Cat and Kings Beach Tavern, weekly live jazz at Bianco. Building your evening around the programming makes it feel less like “just dinner” and more like an event.
