Sweet Spots & Hidden Treats: Caloundra’s Dessert and Bakery Trail
Because let’s be real. A day on the Coast isn’t officially done until you’ve got something sweet in one hand and a napkin in the other.
If you think Caloundra is all about fish and chips, flat whites and beachfront brunches, think again. There’s a whole world of desserts, pastries and sweet treats quietly thriving behind the beachfront façades, tucked into laneways, sunny courtyards and family-run bakeries.
From house-made gelato to flaky croissants, from MasterChef-winner scoops to French fusion patisserie, Caloundra has something for every kind of sweet tooth. Here’s how to discover the best of it.
The Pastry Benchmark
No dessert crawl should begin anywhere too complicated. Head straight to the source: a proper patisserie run by someone who has spent 16 years perfecting the art.
The Pastry Lab is tucked under the Aspect building on Lower Gay Terrace (enter via Knox Avenue), a short walk from Happy Valley and Bulcock Beach. Chris and Emily opened this family-run French fusion patisserie in 2020, and it has since earned a 4.8 rating on Restaurant Guru from over 400 reviews, with multiple reviewers comparing the croissants favourably to what you’d find in Paris. Chris started his apprenticeship at 16, spent 16 years training under Australian, French and American pastry chefs, and the result is a Modern French Fusion style that shows in every layer.
The cabinet is the main event. Almond croissants, lemon meringue croissants (a genius combination that shouldn’t work but absolutely does), salted caramel cruffins, the signature Vanilla Slice, seasonal fruit danishes, chocolate salted caramel tarts, and a ham and cheese croissant with bechamel that gets called “complete and utter perfection” in reviews. They also do High Tea, which is excellent value and includes towers of savouries, scones and petit fours alongside hot croissants and pumpkin quiches. The name comes from Emily’s background as a qualified medical scientist, and the precision shows.
They brew First Batch Coffee, roasted in Noosa, and offer V60 filter and cold brew alongside espresso. Get there early, especially on weekends. The cabinet doesn’t last.
The Artisan Baker
If The Pastry Lab is the French benchmark, 22 Cribb St at 90 Bulcock Street is the artisan counterpoint. Head pastry chef Dhanushka Manjula built this place from scratch as a Landsborough original, and the Caloundra branch opened in late 2025 as the second location. The pastry programme here rotates seasonally, with croissants, tarts and baked goods that bring queues on weekends and a reputation that has spread well beyond the local postcode. The coffee is equally considered, and the pairing of a perfectly pulled espresso with a just-out-of-the-oven pastry is one of the simplest pleasures on Bulcock Street.
Gelato by a MasterChef Winner
When the sun is high and the surf is sparkling, nothing beats a creamy scoop of gelato. And Caloundra has a genuinely world-class option.
Fifty Acres Gelato on Bulcock Beach is owned by Kate Bracks, winner of MasterChef Australia Season 3 (2011). Kate and her family moved to the Sunshine Coast around 2023 and opened Fifty Acres at Bulcock Beach in late 2024. The name comes from the family’s 50-acre hobby farm near Orange in NSW, and the philosophy carries through: real fruit sourced at local markets, Maleny milk in the signature strawberry milk gelato, and a menu that changes with the seasons.
Kate’s favourite flavour is the tiramisu. The strawberry milk is the signature. And if you’re feeling brave, there’s an “Are you up for a challenge?” category on the menu for the more adventurous palate. This isn’t your standard beachside soft-serve operation. It’s a MasterChef winner making gelato by hand with local produce, fifty metres from the sand.
Gelato and Seafood? Why Not Both
De Lish Fish @ Kings at 8 Levuka Avenue on the Kings Beach beachfront is primarily known as a seafood eatery (featured in our seafood article), but they also run an award-winning gelateria on the same premises. The gelato is made fresh on-site daily, with an extensive range of flavours including Salted Caramel, After-Dinner Mint, Amaretto, Chocolate, French Vanilla Bean, Coconut, Ferrero Rocher, Snickers, Roasted Macadamia and Caramel, Espresso, and Baileys Irish Cream. They also do dairy-free sorbets in Passionfruit, Raspberry, Mango, Lemon, Salted Lime, Watermelon and Strawberry, plus new specials every day.
The beauty of this spot is the dual purpose. Order a fish and chip basket, eat it watching the waves, then walk three steps to the gelato counter for dessert. The full beachside loop, no car required.
The Donut Fix
If your sweet tooth leans more toward soft, fluffy dough than flaky pastry, Galactic Donuts at 24 Bowman Road has you covered. This Queensland-born operation (launched in 2021 with stores in Townsville, Rockhampton and Caloundra) hand-crafts over 35 flavours of artisan yeast-raised donuts fresh every single morning. The range runs from classics like Glazed, Cinnamon Jam and Fresh Cream and Jam through to indulgent creations like Biscoff, Chocolate Hazelnut Snow, Ferrero and Apple Cream, with seasonal specials rotating through regularly.
The texture is the thing. The team developed a unique yeast-raised recipe that delivers a soft, pillowy base that’s noticeably different from a standard bakery donut. And yes, the cream donuts use real fresh cream, which shouldn’t need saying but apparently does.
If you’re visiting on a Tuesday, Cheap Tuesday gets you 10 donuts at $2.90 each, which is either excellent value or a dangerous lack of portion control depending on your perspective. Galactic also runs regular community initiatives, including their Chew for Charity campaigns (the most recent raised funds for the Starlight Children’s Foundation) and donut vouchers for local raffles. Open 7 days with pickup, DoorDash and Uber Eats delivery.
The Sweet Container
For something completely different, wander down to Happy Valley.
The Happy Turtle Cafe operates out of a beautifully painted shipping container at Happy Valley Playground on the Esplanade, right on the waterfront. Run by Chloe Donaldson (who took over from Rob Muston’s beloved Happy Valley Coffee Van after its 15-year run), the café has an eco-conscious soul: bring your own cup for a donation to Sea Life Trust Sunshine Coast, all cups are recycled on-site, and remaining produce goes to the homeless. The exterior mural was painted by local Caloundra artists Thom and Marni Stuart, inspired by the Pumicestone Passage surrounding Happy Valley.
The cabinet here is where the sweet action is. Cakes, slices, biscuits, and sweet pastries rotate regularly, and the acai bowl (with granola, fruit, cocoa nibs and peanut butter) is a popular halfway point between breakfast and dessert. Grab a cabinet treat and a coffee, set up on the grass at Happy Valley with the playground and the beach in view, and you’ve got the most relaxed dessert experience in Caloundra. The 4.6 Google rating from 355 reviews confirms the locals agree.
Plan Your Sweet Trail
If you’re the type who likes to map out their sugar stops, here’s one way to do it:
Start at The Pastry Lab near Happy Valley for a morning croissant and a First Batch filter coffee. Walk along the Esplanade to The Happy Turtle for a cabinet slice and a waterfront sit-down. Continue to Fifty Acres Gelato on Bulcock Beach for a scoop of the strawberry milk. Wander to 22 Cribb St on Bulcock Street for an afternoon pastry. Detour to Galactic Donuts on Bowman Road for a Biscoff donut (or a box of ten if it’s a Tuesday). Finish at De Lish Fish @ Kings on the beachfront at Kings Beach for a sunset gelato or an affogato.
